ALASKA REVISITED

Saturday, Nov 13th, 2010

The Nevada Theater, 401 Broad St, Nevada City

8-10pm

Bring your friends, family, children, and neighbors for this unique and inspirational multi-media adventure story, Alaska Revisited. Reinette Senum will recount her adventure through a very unique and animated presentation of storytelling, video and slides. Reinette became the first woman to cross Alaska alone in 1994 while filming the endeavor, herself, for National Geographic. Crossing the last frontier without tent, gun or radio.

Highlights of this trek include cross-country skiing 600 miles down the frozen Yukon River pulling a 160 lb. sled in -55F temperature, building a canoe in an Athabascan native village and paddling 900 miles after spring break-up; without gun, radio or tent.

Reinette completed her 1,500-mile journey in 4 months and 6 days. The story of this journey puts most people on the edge of their seats, explains Reinette, simply because it generally takes the audience beyond their comfort zone and then ends the story with a wild and unexpected twist of fate.

ENVISIONING OUR FUTURE

Dear Residents, Business Owners and NGO’s,

We are inviting you to join us for a very exciting endeavor: the Nevada City City Council, on February 10th, unanimously approved the concept of drawing from its Nevada City stakeholders a measurable sustainability vision for Nevada City.

Darin Dinsmore and Associates, from Truckee, Ca, will be facilitating this process. The overall goal will be to look at sustainability and renewable energy as an economic development tool for Nevada City.

This will establish Nevada City as a community leader opening the door for Federal stimulus funds, job creation, economic development, reducing our carbon footprint as well as our impact on our planet, just to name a few benefits.

We will begin this process by creating a Green Team as well as holding 2 half-day workshops with Darin Dinsmore and Associates. During these workshops we will develop and formulate a strategy for Nevada City to move towards a sustainable community with a focus on job creation and public-private partnerships for success so as to secure grant funding.

This sustainability process will entail:

1)  integrated sustainability framework that could be incorporated into our general plan update or as an element of our general plan

2)  create an implementation program focused for example on eco-districts for retrofitting of existing structures and neighborhoods

3) focus on jobs and the economy

4) create a tracking system as required to monitor success of the project  - both quantitative and qualitative

Please join us in the City Hall Chambers, Monday, March 8th, 8:30am-12:30pm and Tuesday, March 23d, 5pm-9pm for the Green Team Workshops and laying the groundwork for a resilient future!...  we'll be serving, coffee, tea and cookies.

Mission: “To leave the world better than we found it”
